REGISTERING TEXTBREAK AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
================================================
TextBreak is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
following.
7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
See the documentation which should accompany this file for
more information on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should
also accompany this file. Please use it to register the software.
USING TEXTBREAK
================
• If you use TextBreak, please please please send me a note. My addresses
(post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
information in the above section on registration.
Who Will Use TextBreak
---------------------
• TextBreak is an application written mainly for users who regularly
compose messages for on-line services and for other purposes which
require that text be organized such that each line is terminated by
a carriage return, and sometimes a linefeed. Normally on a Mac, it is
only paragraphs that are terminated by carriage returns. This poses
a potential source of agony, since it often requires that you physically
enter the carriage returns into your file, guessing at the best position
to insert one in each line. It is also a pain if you wish to add text to
a file that has already been organized into lines.
What Does TextBreak Do?
-----------------------
• TextBreak, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box) determines the best
location to end each line in a text file, based on criteria you have set up.
It inserts the carriage returns (and linefeeds, if they are turned on) in the
proper locations. The actual file is modified; a copy is not made.
Using TextBreak
---------------
• TextBreak can be used in two ways. You can double-click on the
application icon to open the program, and use the Open... menu item in
the File menu to select text files for modification. Note that only
TEXT files can be modified by TextBreak. You can also modify your
preferences from this menu. You could also drag sets of files, folders,
or disks into the application, “Drop Box-style”. TextBreak will scan
folders and disks provided, and will modify ALL text files in ALL of the
directories provided, no matter what their depth. The latter method
requires Apple Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher. Tabs and spaces
are treated as identical one-column white space characters by
TextBreak.
• To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Cancelling in the
middle of a file causes that file to be left unchanged. However, files
already processed will remain modified.
• TextBreak uses a temp file for processing. Make sure that there is
enough space to make a duplicate copy of the largest file you are
operating on, on the disk that the file is contained in. Also make sure
that the disk is not locked.
Preferences
-----------
• The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the
preferences dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct
parameters have been set up. You can modify these if you wish. If
you don't want to see that window again, just say OK. You will have to
explicitly ask for for the Preferences window the next time you wish
to change anything.
• To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
option key while the program is launching.
• The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can set the maximum
number of columns of a monospaced font (like Monaco or Courier) to
allow in your text files, toggle the insertion of a linefeed after each
carriage return, and define how hyphens are treated in a file.
• When hyphens are turned on, TextBreak can insert a return after a
hyphen. Otherwise, hyphens are treated like any other non-white-space
character.
USING DROP BOXES
=================
Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
and thus their target (parent) is modified.
